Commissions:

There are two categories of Commissions – Collector and Corporate.

Collector Commissions:

On a yearly basis I accept 6 collector or personal commissions. This allows me to spread the work over the year to ensure that each piece receives the attention and time that it deserves.

Commissions can sometimes be a little “trickier” than my regular art pieces because there is the personal knowledge and involvement of you, the client. You have a mental image of a concept and perhaps some photographs of a subject or favourite location that you would like to have incorporated into a piece of art.

Throughout the commission there is an ongoing consultation process to ensure that the final product is exactly what the client expects. There is no sense for either you or myself to go through the expense and effort of creating a personal commissioned work of art and not have the end result that you were hoping for at the start of the project. So to ensure that everything runs smoothly there are several checks and consultative phases throughout the project.

Initial Phase:   During this phase we will discuss the concept of the piece to ensure that we have a full understanding of the process and some preliminary ideas of the artwork. Depending upon your geographical location this can either be done via telephone, email or personal visits. Things to be discussed would include; among others,

    • Size and orientation of the piece – remember the framing process can add an additional 3 to 5 inches on all sides of the finished art. This can influence the location that you intend to display the finished piece.

    • Graphite or mixed medium – some of my work, mostly my Artistic Cartography pieces, entail the use of different mediums other than graphite. In the past I have used Staedtler Marker – similar to “pen & ink”, watercolour paint and acrylic paint. Depending upon the effect that you wish to accomplish and the composition that I, the artist will be aiming to create, these different mediums may be utilized.

    • Artistic Cartography or not - these pieces are a great method to bring together the subject matter and its natural habitat or a favourite geographical location. I’ve used this style of art to bring together annual fishing and camping trips to the actual geographical location of the destination. Historic maps have been used to place a subject back in time to emphasize the historical significance of the subject – a maiden voyage across the Northern Atlantic.

    • The concepts are endless, as are the cartography. If you are considering historical maps please visit http://www.raremapsandbooks.com This is an excellent source of maps and they are very reliable. I have purchased several maps from them and have been extremely pleased with each purchase. If an antique map is chosen for your commission, a professional high resolution scan of the map will be completed and then a Giclée print will be made and become the paper that I work on. I do not work directly on the antique map.
