"Artistic Cartography"

    "Artistic Cartography"
is a relatively new idea that I am pursuing. Basically, I use the map as my canvas or more accurately my paper. This could be a nautical chart as shown on the right or a topographical map. I've used maps issued by the National Geographic Society as can been seen in my Sir Ernest Shackleton series.

We have access to a phenomenal array of maps which gives this concept endless possibilities.

If you have a favourite summer retreat, cottage, canoe or boating  trip, just about anything can be incorporated into a beautiful truly original piece of art.

Please take a look at the maps below to help you with some ideas.

Nature Conservation Groups

If you belong to a nature conservation group, this type of artwork would be ideal to demonstrate the importance of your work. Artistic Cartography has a unique way of bringing the subject matter, albeit an endangered species or a threatened habitat home to it's natural location on earth.

An example of this would be my piece titled "Hawai'i" which depicts a mother Humpback and her calf in their native calving grounds of the Hawaiian islands.

Another may be the "Ghost Bear" on the west coast of British Columbia on Princess Royal Island. This piece is yet to be done.

Below are two new maps that I have recently acquired. They are antique maps of a very high quality that I have had professionally scanned and reprinted on 225 gm paper. These maps will be used to create a Polar Explorer series and a Wildlife series. Once completed the Gilcee prints will be available.

Cartographer:  Stieler Full Title: "Süd-Polar-Karte" Published: Germany,1897.

One of Stieler's more remarkable cartographic productions. A map with a staggering amount of detail, including not less than 14 individual (and highly detailed) inset maps, plus the tracks of numerous early Arctic explorers criss-crossing the oceans. These explorer's are all listed at the bottom, with dates of their journeys, the tracks of each displaying endless dates for points obtained along the way. A magnifying glass should be at hand when you examine this map. A key map in the evolution of this region cartographically- a map which should be in any collection of Arctic

cartography.

Cartographer: Gray Full Title: Northern Regions  Published: Philadelphia,1893.

An attractive example of this very uncommon late 19th century folio sheet map published by O.W. Gray. This map appears to be a scarce late re-issue of an earlier (c.1880-86) Gray plate, published in Philadelphia by Milton R.

Brown for his scarce "Continental Atlas". Evidently Brown bought the plates from Gray and re-issued them. In many instances, the plate imprint was left in place and predates the "official" publication date of 1893.
